The XLR connector is the type of connector most commonly used in professional audio environments, but it also has uses in stage lighting.

XLR connectors are used for microphones, active speakers, audio/video mixing consoles, studio equipment such as amplifiers, turntables, mastering tables and similar equipment, as well as for lighting and industrial applications such as control circuits​​.

Typically, a male XLR connector connects to an object that transmits a signal, such as a microphone, while a female XLR is typically used where the signal is received, such as the inputs of a mixing console.​​
